The Lobby

S4200301

The up stairs venue in the Lobby bar is closed for good it seems. It is very disappointing for the many local musicians and music lovers in the city.

The Lobby bar is located Across from Cork’s famous city hall. It is also just across the river from the south mall. It is situated right on the corner and is adjacent to two roads. It is one of the top if not the top live music venues in the city. My last visit there was last night to see “The girls of summer” play a Halloween gig. There is a bar down stairs but the main venue is situated upstairs. There is an entrance into the downstairs bar and a side one to get upstairs. The stairs up is narrow enough and at the first landing you pay to get in. The price varies from gig to gig. You then walk up another few steps and your in the venue. The room itself is quite small and thity to forty people would probably fill it. The stage is on the left as you just walk up and the bar is on the left aswell. There is a balcony to the right and seating all around the rest of the bar. Features that I particularly like are the height of the ceiling and the big windows. As said it can get packed inside and very hot and stuffy. They have ceiling fans but i haven’t seen them being used on my visits. The bar itself is small as well but the stout in there can’t be faulted. It is really excellent.

The toilets are located downstairs and are some of the worst i have come across. They are filthy and tiny. It is also a fair oul trek when busy from the stage upstairs to the toilets. The venue unfortunately is not accessible to people in wheelchairs. The lobby has its own website. Go and catch a gig there sometime.

Toilet rating: 2/10
Pint rating 9/10
Overall rating: 8/10

Final comment: The lobby is a great place to catch the cream of Cork talent. The pints are good and the atmosphere is usually good. It can get very cramped in there at times and can be a tad uncomfortable. If you have never been then it is definitely worth a visit.
