The Commons Bar

Commons

The Commons Inn is a hotel that is owned by the O’ Neill family. I have been in there three times the most recent being today. Following a look around Blackpool shopping center we decided to come here for some lunch. I have had lunch here before and it was very enjoyable. We found that the car park was packed and had to park a bit away. There is a substantial amount of parking available outside. The Commons Bar is very big and spacious and was very busy today. We were there at about half one and just managed to get a seat in the bar. They have screens advertising what menu is available. This is the first time i have seen this and it is very impressive. I had to queue for quite a while for the carvery counter. Both myself and Jen went for the crown of turkey and it was very good. The lunches cost around 9 euro which is reasonable. I was driving so didn’t drink and we both got minerals. The bar staff were very friendly.

I didn’t use the toilets in the bar but i was at a function in their big room before and the toilets were in very good condition then. The Commons has a very good name as a hotel, restaurant and bar. I don’t know what the night life is like there but for a very enjoyable lunch then this is your place.

Final comment: The Commons Bar is located just off one of Corks busiest roads. I would say it does very well from passing trade. It is a nice place.

The Viaduct Inn

The Viaduct, Cork

It is situated just off the road and attracts a lot of passing trade. The Bandon road is the main route from Cork City to West Cork. I have been in there a few times for lunch. They serve a decent carvery lunch and on all my visits it has been very busy. The bar is just inside the door but i have always went into the bigger area at the back. It is not a place i would consider heading at night time but it is convenient to stop off at. I have had one pint of Murphy’s in there and it wasn’t too bad. They do BBQ’S during the summer that might be worth checking out. I would hazard a guess that the Viaduct does a better daytime trade than at night. There are not many residental areas in the vicinity so you would have to drive and not drink or alternatively get a taxi.

The toilets were fine on the one occasion that i made use of them. The only complaint i would have about the place is that it seemed to be disorganised on my last visit. Tables were not cleared and staff were not easily found. That was only on one occasion though. It is a nice stop off for a bite to eat.

Final comment: The Viaduct Inn does not have much competition in the immediate area. Their carvery lunch is a nice treat.

Paudie’s Bar

We were in Dingle a couple of days ago to visit the aquarium. To be honest it was extremely interesting and i would recommend a visit to anyone. We were lucky to get a very comprehensive guided tour from a friend who works there. Afterwards we decided to go for lunch and Paudie’s Bar was recommended to us. It is the bar in the hotel. It enjoys a town center location. It is quite a spacious bar and there are many comfortable seating areas available. We ordered our food and it was tasty and reasonable as well. Dingle has a reputation for being an expensive place but our meals were not to expensive. As i was not driving i tried a pint of their Guinness and it was a very good one to be honest. I also ordered 2 pints of Coca Cola off the bar man and i asked twice and he gave me two glasses instead. There are nice stone effects in the bar and they also have lights that change colour. We noticed two old men sitting watching everyone who passed them as if this was their normal pass time.

The toilets are most definately the most modern and cleanest i have come across in all the reviews. There is an attractive hallway out to them and i cannot fault them in any way. They were clean, spacious and very usable. There is also a restaurant called Paudie’s in the hotel. Dingle attracts a huge number of tourists during the summer season and this hotel and bar will inevitably do very well. After we left the bar we went and got some fried mars bars in a cafe place up the road. Definately something to try once!

Final Comment: Paudie’s Bar in The Dingle Bay Hotel is central, good value and certainly worth a visit if in Dingle.

O’ Connors

We went in here as well last night. The pub is on High Street in Killarney. It is narrow at the front part and there was a traditional session taking place on the right which was very entertaining. I went to the bar and was waiting quite a while to get served. It was a bit annoying to be honest. I was not the only person waiting. I eventually got a pint of Guinness and a glass of Budweiser. The music kept us entertained and there was some very talented musicians available. There was a good mixture of people in this pub and it was quite busy. We were sitting just across from the bar in the front part of the pub. Behind the bar there are loads of currency notes from all over the world which was interesting.

The toilets are located down the back of the pub and are very small. They are also the first toilets i have come across where there was no cubicle. This seems like a strange idea. I wonder if there is another toilet there. I have mixed feelings about this pub. It appears they do a good trade and have good music but hanging around waiting to get served isn’t ideal.

Final comment: O’ Connors is a lively pub that is worth visiting. They serve food here too.

The Vintage Bar

The closed curtains attracted us in. We could not have picked a more different pub from the previous one. There was about 6 or seven people sitting at the bar and that was it. I ordered a Guinness and a white wine. There are some very interesting seats in this pub. We sat near the television on comfortable chairs. The television is sitting on a huge chest of drawers. There is a pool table in an elevated section but it was covered so we couldn’t have a game! It is a pretty small pub overall and was extremely quiet last night. The pint of Guinness was very enjoyable. It even came in a Guinness glass! It is certainly the kind of pub that i enjoy having a few drinks in.

The toilets were suprisingly very modern and clean. It appears they were only recently renovated. The Vintage Bar is not the livliest spot in Killarney but for a few decent pints it is worth checking out.

Final comment: The Vintage Bar is a grand quiet spot where locals enjoy their drinks.

The Danny Man

The Danny Man is a pub situated on New Street in Killarney, Co. Kerry. We were down in Killarney for the night last night and decided to try some new pubs. We started off with some dinner in Hannigans bar at the International Hotel. It was great and very reasonable. We then walked to The Danny Man. This is one of Killarney’s big pubs. They also serve food and have accomodation available. There are two sections and a vast amount of seating available. It is very much a tourists bar. Last night it was packed with tourists especially Americans. The live music was provided by Natural Gas who had the hit song ‘The Langer’. They didn’t play this song while we were there. Below is a picture of Tim O’ Riordan and the band.

I had a pint of Guinness and Jen had a glass of wine and both were good. There is a pool table available if you feel like a game. The Danny Man is a bit too much of a tourist haunt for me. It is a pub that looks after it customers and they feel that this is a typical ‘Irish’ pub. I was in there a couple of years back to watch a match and it was very quiet at that time. The toilets are well kept and were fine when i saw them. The Danny Man is a pub that has a lot to offer and does especially well in the summer season. It is certainly not my favourite pub in Killarney but it attracts a lot of tourist interest. Have a look!

Toilet rating: 7/10
Pint rating: 7/10
Overall rating: 7/10

Final comment: The Danny Man is a ’superpub’ in Killarney. If you are looking for live music, check this place out.

Roberts Cove Inn

We were down there last night for my graduation meal. We all went into the restaurant and there was 15 of us there. We didn’t actually end up going into the bar area because we stayed at our tables following our meal. The food it has to be said was delicious and the service we received was first class. I got through a good few pints of Murphy’s and they were all of very good quality and enjoyable. The only thing was they all came in a Guinness glass! The restaurant area is very cosy and is very comfortable for a meal. Everybody was in good spirits and that helped to make the night a success. It is most certainly a place that i will head back down to in the future. It enjoys a very scenic location just opposite a beach and has some delightful views. From the outside it is a very distinctive orange building.

The toilets are situated up a stairs and to the right. They were very clean and well maintained last night. I honestly cannot fault them. There was also a disabled toilet downstairs. We had a few songs and a bit of a laugh and left quite late. I have to say that the meal was great and the staff couldn’t have been more accomodating. It is a little bit out in the country but is certainly worth the trip.

Toilet rating: 8/10
Pint rating: 8/10
Overall rating: 8/10

Final comment: Roberts Cove Inn is the perfect place for a romantic meal or a group night out. The food is good and the drink is not bad eithier.

The Pinecroft

S4200002
It is just across the road from the previously reviewed Grange bar. Myself and Jen headed in there for a drink after a meal in Douglas a couple of weeks ago. There is parking available outside. It is attached to a carry out off licence. We went into the lounge which is the door on the right on the way in. There was a good few lads sitting at the bar and Jen noticed that she was the only girl inside. We sat over to the right. I went to the bar and ordered a 7up and a white wine. I was waiting a while to get served as the bar man was nowhere to be seen. It turned out that they didn’t have any quarter bottles of white wine so he had to open a big bottle. We noticed a dog wandering around the pub at one stage.

The toilets are out towards the back and they were alright on my visit. I would certainly say that this pub is a locals pub. I didn’t get to see the bar so i can’t comment on that. Have a look if your in the area.

Toilet rating: 6/10
Overall rating: 6/10

Final comment: The Pinecroft is a pub that has potential as Grange is a very big residental area. A weekend visit may tell more.

Bepmoha

S4200033

Bepmoha is a pub in the historical town of Nessebar near Sunny Beach resort in Bulgaria. We went on a day trip to the old town and it is a very interesting place. There are very old churches and old houses that are archelogically very important. When we finished our visit we decided to pop in for a drink to one of the local pubs. They really try their best to get you in and enjoy a bit of banter that doesn’t make much sense. The good thing about the people in the resorts is that although they are pushy if you say no then they leave you alone with no hard feelings. We were directed to a seat outside in this bar. I got a big beer and Jen had a small one and it came to about 2 euro 50. It was a perfect summers day and we enjoyed the beautiful views out over the harbour. This bar is also a B+B and a cafe.

S4200031

I decided to use the toilets and there was a table where you leave money on the way in. It was basically a single toilet with a sink. I have to say that the beer was very nice and we were joined by an English couple who had the same drinks as us. A nice place to sit down while waiting for the bus.

Toilet rating: 5/10
Pint rating: 7/10
Overall rating: 6/10

Final comment: Bepmoha is a nice little Bulgarian tourist bar. There are some nice seating areas outside where it is very pleasant.

Irish Pub

S4200084

Another pub we visited in Albena is their ‘Irish Pub’. As i have said before you will find an Irish Bar no matter where you travel in the world. In the majority of cases they are not Irish owned or run. In Albena this is the only one. We didn’t actually go in there at night but had our breakfast in there one morning. There is plenty of comfortable outside seating available. There was normally someone trying to entice you in with their special offers and promotions. Inside it is a very modern establishment. It is small but well decorated. U2 blasted the airwaves as we sat enjoying our food. We were served by a very pleasant Bulgarian who appeared to always be working no matter what time we passed the pub. There was live music outside the bar on regular nights. The musicians appeared to be very talented.

I didn’t check the toilets here so haven’t a clue what they are like. I enjoyed my short stop there but to be honest was not that inclined to head in at night. Again if you are ever in holidays here this pub is available to you.

Breakfast rating: 7/10
Overall rating: 6.5/10

Final comment: The Irish Pub in Albena is a grand place if you want to sit and think about our beautiful country while abroad! It’s a holiday pub.
