The Temple Inn

Just down the road from The Venue Bar lies The Temple Inn. We went in there for just the one drink on a sunday night following a meal in the Luyan Briar Rose on the Douglas road. The Temple Inn has a prominent roadside location, parking is limited to the side of the road. There are two entrances into the pub. We found the bar man to be extremely good humoured and polite. He offered Jen a wine list for her to choose from. I got a pint of Murphy’s and the two of the drinks cost 8 euro. The pint of Murphy’s was my first following holidays and it was ok. It is quite a big pub and has a lot of interesting memorabilia on the walls including the Cork football and hurling teams of the century. The pub was fairly busy and a lot of people had been in there watching the Kerry/Tyrone match all day from what some guy was telling me. There is plenty seating available and it is a very comfortable pub

The toilets are out near the back of the pub and there is also a smoking area out the back. There was a lot of people congreated out there. The toilets were in good condition when i saw them. There are two cubicles available. It is a pub that i enjoyed visiting. I felt very comfortable in there and Jen said that she liked the place too. It is a pub worth checking out if you are in the Ballintemple area. I would say that it does well pre and post games at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

Final comment: The Temple Inn is a locals pub given its location. The were more than welcoming to us even though it was our first visit.

Booms

The bar i most enjoyed on my trip to Cyprus was a place called Booms in Amathus. It is a relatively small place and enjoys a roadside location. We were made feel welcome from the first time that we went in. The sign up stated that there was karaoke every night and this was the place i was looking for. I love singing so i knew i was going to enjoy here. I was here nearly every night of the holiday and so was Jen. There is a few seats out side and the rest in the bar. The first night we went in we met Ruby who is in charge of the karaoke. We got to know here over the next two weeks and she is genuinely one of the nicest people i have ever met. She knew all of our names and treated us very well. She has an excellent voice herself and we enjoyed her singing.

I was mainly drinking Keo in here and it was fine. My sister Laura loved heading in there and even though she didn’t sing she enjoyed the place a lot. The owner of the bar is called Dino and he is a great character. He has a great love for Ireland and we sang many Irish songs together. Grace was his favourite. I saw that he sold Guinness and would normally not have it outside of Ireland but he gave me a free pint to test it. The first pint wasn’t great but it improved after another few! He even let us behind the bar and let me show him how to pull a good pint. Some of our group were unhappy with the quality of the drinks they got. They voiced this to the staff. A tip is to make sure you ask for the imported spirits if you want them and they will cost you extra.

The toilets are up a narrow stairs and in fairness they were always well kept. The cubicle in the gents has no lock on the door. We met some very nice people in Booms. Some were on their holidays and others were locals. I couldn’t count how many songs i sang over the two weeks. We were nearly always the last to leave! Thanks to Dino, Ruby and Angelleta from Poland. It is most certainly a place that i will head back to if i am back in Cyprus. Check it out if you are in Limassol and looking for a friendly bar with plenty of craic. All the Irish gang really had a laugh here!

Final comment: Out of all the bars i have been in abroad, Booms is my favourite. It is small but you are assured a very warm welcome from Dino and Ruby.

The Step Inn

step inn
You will always find an Irish bar anywhere in the world as i have stated before. The Step Inn is the one we frequented in Limassol. We were in there on three occasions during our holiday. The first time we went in to see the all Ireland Hurling final between Cork and Galway. The second time we went in to see Cork City playing Slavia Prague in the UEFA Cup. The final time we went in we just went in for the craic! It is a very busy pub and appears to do very well. There is live music on there every night and also karaoke. I sang one song in there on one night. Apparently there is a nightclub down stairs as well but i didn’t get to see it. It is a big enough pub downstairs with plenty of seating inside and out. It was always warm enough to sit outside in your shorts at night. A guy from a restaurant across the road gave us a card to get free shots. He claims to have lived in Newcastle West in Limerick for a couple of years.

The toilets in the Step Inn tended to get a bit messy. There is one cubicle available and you can’t lock the door! Upstairs there are some arcade games and also a few pool tables. Its a pub that i enjoyed visiting although i’d question how many Irish people are associated with the place.

Toilet rating: 5/10
Pint rating: 7/10
Overall rating: 7/10

Final comment: We enjoyed the Step Inn and in fairness they did show all the matches. Its one to pop into when in Cyprus.

Franx

franx

Franx is a place we really enjoyed on our holidays across the road from the hotel. Most days we used to in there and have our lunch. They served good food and always provided a friendly smile. It is a restaurant/Bar that always had some custom. I was in there once for dinner as well and it was grand. This is a place that had Karaoke on every night and the night i had dinner there i sang a few songs for good measure! Franx certainly benifited from its location and good reputation. They have a nice seating area in the front part of the bar and there is a pool table and games machine in the back. I had a couple of beers in there and they were fine. We had many pints of Coca Cola in there with our food. I would certainly consider Franx more of a restaurant than a bar.

I never used their toilet facilities but from what other people said they were fine and clean. They are located up stairs. If i go back to Cyprus i would most certainly head back to Franx for a bite to eat!

Food rating: 8.5/10
Overall rating: 8/10

Final comment: Franx is a friendly establishment where you can enjoy some good food and drink.

Jonnys

jonny's

Jonnys pub was the first pub that we visited on our first night in Cyprus. I had seen a website relating to this pub before i went out. We walked in and noticed that it is quite a big pub and was very busy. I ordered a Carlsberg and it was a grand pint. The waitresses gave us some popcorn to nibble on. I scanned through the Karaoke book looking for a song to sing. My brother and sister had a game of pool and we listened to people singing. I went up and sang a song and it was grand. A guy who enjoyed it even bought me a pint! We only stayed in there for the one drink. To be honest i thought that Jonnys lacked atmosphere and because of that i didn’t head in there again for the remainder of the holiday. I normally prefer smaller pubs when i go on holidays.

I didn’t get to see the toilets but the girls that were with us didn’t think that they were great. In fairness the staff behind the bar were nice but we found other pubs that we liked more. Jonnys is another pub located in the Amathus area of Limassol.

Toilet rating: 4/10
Pint rating: 6/10
Overall rating: 5/10

Final comment: Jonnys pub has karaoke at the weekends.

Chasers

S4200063

It is under new ownership and apparently they have the best pool table in Limassol. I was only in there on one night and most of the lads from the wedding party had a pool competition. In fairness it was very enjoyable and it has to be said that it is a very good table. It is quite a big pub and there are some comfortable seating areas around. I had a few pints of Keo and again i enjoyed them. Both Keo and Carlsberg are very popular beers in Cyprus. The staff in this pub appeared to be friendly and i think they were Scottish. They show live sports events in this bar. I passed Chasers a good few times over the two weeks and it appeared to be quite busy.

The toilets are up a narrow stairs that are quite steep. They were in generally good condition. Chasers appeared to be a relaxing pub for a drink. Others headed in there for a second night as well.

Toilet rating: 6/10
Pint rating: 6/10
Overall rating: 6/10

Final comment: Chasers is a nice spot for a drink when in Limassol. Have a game of pool while your there.

Four Seasons Hotel

four

We were in Cyprus for my brothers wedding and the reception was held at the prestigious Four Seasons hotel. This hotel exudes class and i’d say thats represented in the cost of staying there. The wedding couple did that for their honeymoon and really enjoyed being pampered. It really is a 5 star hotel with all the trimmings. We had our meal in one of the most beautiful settings i have ever been to. It was the Cafe Tropical and it is located next to a beautiful lagoon with fantastic tropical fish. We had our own area to enjoy our meal and the staff and service were outstanding. Following the meal we made our way upstairs to Vista Bar and Terrace. This is a very exclusive bar with comfortable seating and a glass dance floor. There was a musician playing the piano and a girl singing with him. I drank a very sweet cocktail which i enjoyed a lot. I also had a few pints of Keo. I had the opportunity to go up and sing and i did so. Again there is table service available in this bar. We all enjoyed the beautiful surroundings.

The toilets in the hotel are very clean and you could have slept on the floor, they are so nice. We also sat outside the bar overlooking the sea. There are open log cabins where you can sit and enjoy a drink.

Toilet rating: 9.5
Pint rating: 7/10
Overall rating: 7/10

Final comment: The drinks in this bar are more expensive than those available in other bars around. There is also a 10 euro cover charge after 9pm. It is a bar and a hotel that is worth a visit.

Mediterranean Beach Hotel

I have returned from my two week holiday in Cyprus. It is a very beautiful country with many great things to see and do. We stayed at the Mediterranean Beach Hotel. It is a fine hotel with some excellent facilities. Any pub that i go into, no matter where in the world it happens to be, i will review it. There are three bars in this hotel. The Santorini cocktail lounge, The Corinthian Cocktail bar and the Lagoon pool bar. I never had a drink in the first bar but enjoyed a couple in the other bars. The Corinthian bar is a trendy up market bar that provides table service. The waiters and waitresses are very attentive and provide a good service. I only had one drink in the bar and the others were outside overlooking the pool and the sea. They have entertainment on most nights including a fun magic show. I was mainly drinking beer on the holiday and their pints were grand. Keo is the beer that i drank and it was enjoyable.

The Pool bar is another one and actually has seats in the pool where Jen and Laura went for a daily drink. They have decent sandwiches and do some nice cocktails and fruit juices. The staff there are generally very pleasant and chat away. The toilets all around the hotel are in good condition generally. It is a 4 star hotel and it is most certainly a place that i would consider coming back to for a holiday. It is in the Amathus area of Limassol which is a bit outside of the main area. It only costs 70 cents to get the bus into Limassol and taxi’s are everywhere.

Final comment: I enjoyed having a few drinks in the hotel but it was generally for quiet drinks. The pool bar closes at 6 and The Corinthian bar closes at 12. I would most certainly recommend it as a comfortable hotel in Cyprus.

Cahir House Hotel

Smack in the centre of Cahir (well, actually in the square) is the Cahir House Hotel, which it would appear, is the perfect place to stop for lunch. I stopped in on my way back from Cashel one afternoon and although it was not the offical eating hour (i.e. lunchtime) they still had a selection wide enough to suit all tastes. Being the savage that I am I opted for a large fried breakfast and thankfully my veritable mountain of food was ready in quicker than average time. The bar, on the right as you enter the hotel reception, is quite small but very comfortable.

As one would expect from a well established business, the decor is traditional, no stainless steel, transparent glass and halogen spotlights here thank you very much. The staff are pleasant without being overpowering and I found my relatively short visit to be quite agreeable. Bit pricey but nothing out of the ordinary for a hotel. Another one of those places I’ve often driven past and meant to call into, Cahir House Hotel is one I’ll no doubt be back to; if only for lunch.

Off On Holidays

I’m off on holidays for two weeks to Cyprus so new content may be non existent until i return. There may be a new site on return called www.cypruspubs.com!! Damn. I just checked and this site already exists!!
