De Barras

Following our trip to An Sugan we took a stroll around Clonakilty and spotted De Barras pub. I have heard so much about this place that i had to go in and have a look. It is known as De Barras folk club. It is situated on Pearse street. It won the prestigious award of pub of the year in 2003. It has won much acclaim from musicians all over the world. I haven’t been at a gig in there but after going in would love to. From the moment we walked into the pub we could see that this is a very unique place. We sat in the front bar and i ordered a coke and a glass of Murphy’s. Jen said that her stout was very nice and she enjoyed it more than the previous one. They serve a fine selection of sandwiches. The table we sat at was like a very old school table with a wheel under it. I was atounded at the amount of music memorabilia and the different instruments on display. There are quite a lot of tributes to Noel Redding who played bass with The Jimi Hendrix experience. I was genuinely impressed with the whole set up.

I used the toilets between the front bar and venue at the back. It is small but was in grand condition. I took a walk into the back area and took a look around. I would say it is a fantastic place to be when there is a gig on. John Spillane had just played there a few days earlier. Overall it is a pub that is most certainly worth visiting and i will definately head in there and see a gig in the future. If you are looking for a genuine Irish pub in a very scenic area or are looking for some decent music, then head for De Barras.

An Sugan

We took a drive out west yesterday and decided on here to have a bite to eat. An Sugan is on Wolf Tone Street. It looks impressive from the outside. We sat in a little snug area next to a blazing fire across from the bar. If you are ordering food there is a board with what is available, there are no menus for bar food. I ordered a pint and a glass of Murphy’s. Jen decided that she would try out some stout! The pints were only alright to be honest. The food that we got was very tasty. I got lasagne and Jen got a chicken panini. It got very busy while we were in there and most of the other people were enjoying food as well. We noticed a lot of people making reservations for the restaurant which indicates that it is popular.

The bar area is divided into two sections that we saw. We sat in the front area. If in the pub take a look up and you will see lots of cards stuck up there. The toilets are out the back and i had trouble finding the gents. I asked a girl that was working there and she showed me. The toilets were in good condition. An Sugan is a place that i would return to if i was in Clonakilty again.
