Mulcahy’s

Mulcahys

On my way home from Waterford i opted for the scenic rather than direct route home. We stopped off in Clonmel and ended up heading into Mulcahy’s at 47 Gladstone street. Mulcahy’s is a bar, restaurant, nightclub and also provides accomodation. Both myself and Jen were suprised by the sheer size of the place. It is most certainly a super pub. We walked through and it is a very long pub and can accomodate a huge number of people. They were serving a very tempting carvery lunch but we had a fine breakfast at the hotel so we passed. I would think that this pub is on a par with Reardens in Cork City for size. We walked all the way through the pub looking for a seat and the choice was very limited. They appeared to be doing a massive sunday trade. They were showing the Everton vs Newcastle game on the many tv’s around including the very big screen down the back of the pub. We found a seat near the front and i ordered a mineral and a glass of red wine.

The toilets that i used are very big but were very dated looking considering the modern pub. It was a very enjoyable stop off and it truly is a fine pub. I would think that it is a place that is very well known in the area and is very popular. They have a website @ www.mulcahys.ie

Final comment: We only had a whistle stop visit to Mulcahy’s but it appears to be a very decent pub. If you are ever in clonmel you are bound to come across this place.

The Munster

The last pub that we frequented on our night in Waterford city was named The Munster. I saw this pub when we were driving into the city earlier and i knew i would have to take a look. It is situated just a short walk from Bowreys. Just as you walk in on your left you will find the port snug. The bar is furher up on the left and there is pleny of comfortable seating available. I had a pint of Guinness and i didn’t end up finishing it. It was a very good pint but the previous pint i had was not great so i didn’t tempt fate! We were sitting near the front of the bar and i noticed the wheel of a ship and there is also some interesting features on the ceiling in the pub. It is quite a big pub. Apparently there is live traditional Irish music on at the weekends but there wasn’t when we were there.

The toilets are up at the back of the pub. They were fine when i used them. It is a grand pub and i enjoyed visiting it. It fitted in very nicely with our websites name. Check out The Munster bar for yourself.

Final comment: The Munster appeared to be a very popular judging by the amount of people inside.

Bowreys Bar and Nightclub

We continued walking through the streets of Waterford and came upon Bowreys Bar and nightclub across from the towers hotel. We asked the bouncer whether we were going into a bar and nightclub and he just said that they serve alcohol! We went in and noticed a big dancefloor. There was seating all around this. It was certainly a nightclub that we were in. The first bar we encountered was on the left and it sold only cocktails. They have a great selection of concoctions available but at a price. Jen got a cosmopoliton which cost 7.50. The next bar we found served everything you need. I ordered a pint of Guinness which was a bad idea. The pint wasn’t great and i should have had something else. It was great that we didn’t have to pay coming in and we only stayed for the one anyway.

The toilets are located up stairs. They were very well kept and there was a guy who gave you your hand towel when you finished washing your hands. I gave him 70 cents and he asked me if i wanted a spray of his many aftershaves and deodarants on display. Normally i find this somewhat intrusive but he didn’t put any pressure on to give him money. If you are looking for a nightclub in Waterford city that is quite central then Bowreys may be the place for you.

Final comment: We were at about 12am and it was relatively quiet. I would say that it got a lot busier in the following hour or so.

Jordans

Our next Waterford City stop off was a pub called Jordans. This is a pub that is facing the River Suir. We were passing and decided to go in. The first thing that i noticed as i walked into this pub was the wine leather seats. There is a wooden rail over the bar that is very unusual. There was a few people around the bar but it was quiet in general. The television was showing highlights of the premiership. It has an American theme and is a very different but enjoyable experience. I got a pint of Guinness as per usual and it was a very enjoyable pint. We got a few stares as we walked in but people just got back to their drinks. Jen noticed that she was the only female in the pub but she said she is getting used to that! It is a small bar but very relaxing.

The toilets reminded me of the toilets in Cogans in Carrigaline. They were small but their condition was alright. I noticed that they had a beer garden out the back but didn’t get to check it out. Jordans is a pub that i like but may not suit everybody. It has a convenient location.

Final comment: Jordans is a good pub with a bit of character.

The Chapter House Bar

Belfry Hotel Waterford

The next pub we visited was The Chapter House Bar. It is the bar in the Belfry hotel in the city center. It is a very modern and classy bar. It has seating on split levels around the pub. The bar staff in this pub were especially pleasant. It is one of the best designed pubs that i have been in for a long while. There are plenty of private seating areas to avail of. I had a pint of Guinness and it was a decent pint. Jen has a vodka, soda and lime. There was a cd playing and there was about 15 people in the pub. I think that hotel bar staff are generally more attentive than staff in other pubs. This bar is very comfortable and it can accomodate quite a good number of people.

The toilets are located out the door near the lobby in the hotel. They were very clean and in pristine condition. I couldn’t fault them. The Belfry hotel looked like a decent hotel. Their hotel bar is a very nice place to enjoy a drink.

Toilet rating: 9/10
Pint rating: 8/10
Overall rating: 8.5/10

Final comment: The Chapter House Bar is a very comfortable, centrally located hotel bar.

T & H Doolans

T H Doolans

T & H Doolans was the next pub we decided to visit last night. It enjoys a city center location on Georges Street. From the moment i stepped into this pub i knew that i would like it. It reminded me of Mulligans pub in Dublin that has been reviewed previously. I ordered a pint of Guinness and we looked for a seat but we settled for a counter to rest our drinks. It is a city pub with a distinctly country feel. There are a couple of sections and they were very busy. There was a live traditional Irish band playing and they were very good. The pint of Guinness was very enjoyable. It was definately the best pint that i had so far in my Waterford pub reviews. It is a pub that you will feel very welcome in. We were in a different section to where the band were but we could still hear them and could talk without shouting.

The toilets were alright but there was a bit of an odour in them. This is a fine pub that i was delighted we got to visit. Even though it was a very cold night there was people sitting out the front of the pub. The next time that i am in Waterford i will take a trip back to this pub.

Toilet rating: 6/10
Pint rating: 8.5/10
Overall rating: 8.5/10

Final comment: T & H Doolans is a traditional pub just off Waterford city’s main shopping area.

The Bank Bar

As we were passing this pub i was attracted by the appearence of this fine building. I was informed that it is a former AIB bank. 30 O’ Connell street is where you will find it. We were greeted by a bouncer on the door and he gave us the once over. There is a nice kind of snug area on the right just inside the door. It is an ultra modern pub. The music in the bar was too loud for comfort but it was attracting a lot of people who were enjoying it. Southpark was being shown on a plasma screen in the bar. There was an area up near the dj where a lot of people were congregated. It is a smaller pub than i imagined it would be. We didn’t have any problems getting a seat and i had a pint of Guinness. It was a a grand pint. The crowd in this bar were mainly people under 25. It was the impressive exterior that attracted me in but it is not the kind of pub i would spend a whole night in.

The toilets are small and quite cramped. I had to queue for a while. They were in good condition other than that. It is a pub that is appealing to a certain age group that like a certain type of music. It is worth going in to this pub even if just to imagine what the bank would have been like.

Toilet rating: 6.5/10
Pint rating: 7/10
Overall rating: 7/10

Final comment: Take a look at this pub for your self.

The Dry Dock Bar

dooleys 2

We were down in Waterford for the night last night and we stayed at Dooleys hotel in the city center. I decided to take the opportunity to review a few pubs while there. We got a very good deal on the hotel and were delighted with the room and the hotel in general. There is car parking available across the road by the bus station. It costs 5.50 for 24 hours. The Dry dock bar is the main bar in the hotel and is a very trendy hotel bar. It is a good size and is split into two areas. There is the main bar and The Paddy Kirwan room just off the main bar. We sat in this room and there is plenty of horse racing memorabilia to grab your attention. The seats in this area are very comfortable. We ordered bar food from the a la carte menu and it was delicious and very good value. Jen had a glass of red wine and i had a mineral. I didn’t have a pint in the bar. The whole bar was full of people eating food which indicates that it is very popular for food. There is live Irish music on a Wednesday night during the summer season. There is live music every Friday and Saturday night.

dooleys

The toilets are situated outside of the bar in the main lobby of the hotel. They are big toilets and in immaculate condition. This is a great bar and a great hotel. I can highly recommend Dooleys if you are thinking of staying in Waterford city. It has a lot of old world charm combined with modern day facilities. I would certainly stay here again. Check the hotel out at www.dooleys-hotel.ie

The Arches

We were strolling through Cobh on a sunny Saturday afternoon and decided to head into a pub called The Arches. It is a pub with an off licence and a restaurant up stairs. The bar itself is quite small but comfortable. There is a main section and another section off by the toilets. I had a pint of Murphy’s and Jen had a glass of red wine. There was an Irish rugby match on one television and an English rugby game on another. There was a few people inside and it was a Saturday afternoon. The pint of Murphy’s was very good and Jen enjoyed the wine as well. We didn’t stay here for all that long but it was grand for the one drink.

The gents toilet was fine. It was in good condition to be fair. I don’t know what this pub is like at night but it could well be worth checking out.

Toilet rating: 7/10
Pint rating: 7/10
Overall rating: 7/10

Final comment: The Arches is another of Cobh’s public houses. There are loads more to review here yet!

O Murcu Tabairne

O Murcu Tabairne is the second pub that we visited in Minane Bridge last night. It is located just up the road from the previous one. As i walked in i immediately felt at home. The lady behind the bar was very welcoming and there was just two other men there. The only two taps in the pub serve Guinness and Murphy’s. There appeared to be quite a lot of Murphy’s memorabilia around this pub. Suprisingly my pint was served in a Heineken glass! We sat just to the right as you go in. Jen commented that it was like sitting in someones sitting room, it was so quiet! As we were sitting having a chat a dog came over to us and this was something you don’t see too often in pubs anymore. It is a small pub overall but quite comfortable. The selection of draft drinks may be limited but this is not such a bad thing. As long as there is stout available i will be happy. I thought the pint tasted strange but as i drank it, it was fine.

I decided to use the toilets so i walked out one door and had to open a bolt in another one. I then walked across the yard and into a kind of shed where there was a urinal and one cubicle. The condition wasn’t too bad although if it was a very wet and cold night i wouldn’t fancy treking in and out. I have to say that i really enjoyed visiting this pub as well. It is perfectly suited to a quiet country area. It may not be the most modern of establishments but it caters for its customers needs.

Toilet rating: 5/10
Pint rating: 6.5/10
Overall rating: 7.5/10

Final comment: O Murcu Tabairne is an old fashioned country pub that i had fun visiting. Minane Bridge is an up and coming area and these pubs will benefit from any developments in the village.
