O’ Mahony’s

Watergrasshill is a village located about 15 minutes drive from the Jack Lynch Tunnel off the main Cork to Dublin road. Myself and Jen decided to pay the place a visit and review a couple of its finest drinking establishments. Watergrasshill is now bypassed so watch out for the turn off. The first pub we visited was O’ Mahony’s. There is car parking available at the side of the road. It was quite busy inside and it appeared that some of the patrons had been drinking for the best part of the day. One guy was up on a high stool, which was quite unsteady doing some sort of dance! How he didn’t fall off i will never know. The pub is split into two sections. There was a mixture of young and older people out enjoying the night. In fairness the man behind the bar was very polite and efficient and he pulled a very decent pint of Murphy’s. There was a big projected screen in the back section showing a premiership match. We were getting a lot of stares from people in the bar wondering who we were.

The toilets are off the back section and through an area where i noticed loads of coats to be hanging. The toilets themselves aren’t too bad but they were in an awful state when i went in. One of the urinals was covered in vomit that smelled discusting and really gave a bad impression. I found this pub to be quite modern inside with a good mixture of people. There was no need for music as everyones conversation filled the room. O’ Mahony’s is a good pub overall.

Final comment: The toilets dampened my overall impression of this pub however it certainly has a lot of appeal.

The Maritime Bar

The Maritime Bar is the hotel bar in the Commodore hotel in Cobh Co Cork. This is the next place that we ventured to. This pub is on your right as you walk into the hotel. The bar is on the left and there are seating areas down to the right. It is a very comfortable pub. It is carpeted and as i have said before this is not something you see in too many pubs any more. We sat down in the first section and took a nice table with a spectacular view over the harbour. I ordered a 7up and two white wines and was served promptly. A quarter bottle of white wine will cost you 3 euro 95 cent. There was quite a lot of people eating bar food and it looked very appetising. There are two seating areas and they both accomodate a good number of people. I am not sure if there is reular entertainment in the bar but i think the hotel operates a night club in a room within the hotel. It is a nice bar to enjoy a relaxing drink in.

The toilets are situated out near the reception area. The gents is quite big and was generally in good condition when i went in. The Maritime Bar if being honest is not somewhere i would head again for a drink. On the other hand if i wanted something nice to eat while in Cobh i would head back. If you ever end up staying in this hotel, try their relaxing bar.

Final comment: The Marimtime Bar is a grand spot with very nice views out over the water.

The Mauretania

Following another very enjoyable meal at the roberts cove inn we took the ferry across the water to Cobh. We wandered the streets in search of some warmth and came upon The Mauretania. It is nothing special to look at from the outside but we had a look inside. Cobh is renouned for being the last port of call of the Titanic before its final journey. This pub is named after the ship that was built in 1906 and made her maiden voyage from liverpool to Queenstown (as Cobh was known in the past). It is a very small pub. There was a couple we knew inside and after a quick chat we sat across from the bar. I ordered a Murphy’s and two glasses of white wine. I noticed many musical instruments on the wall in the pub. There was a good crowd inside and there was music playing in the background. It is certainly a quaint little bar and would not be everyones cup of tea. I enjoyed the Murphy’s and have to say that it was a good pint.

The ladies toilets got the thumbs down from the two women with me. They are up a steep stairs and did not have any loo roll! The gents are situated down stairs and are very small. The entrance to them is extremely small. There was an old style Cogans towel that i refrained from using. It appeared to be in good condition other than that. Its a grand pub for a drink during the afternoon but if it got anyway packed it could be uncomfortable and i’d say the queue for the toilet would be something worth talking about!

Toilet rating: 6/10
Pint rating: 7.5/10
Overall rating: 7/10

Final comment: The Mauretania is centrally located in Cobh facing the sea. If on a visit to the town then pop in.

Desmonds (The Ovens Bar)

Situated just off the recent Ballincollig bypass lies Desmonds, otherwise known as The Ovens Bar. We stopped in here for a look on our way back from an eventful trip to Kerry. The pub enjoys a roadside location with plenty parking available outside. We walked in through a side entrance and noticed that most people were eating what looked to be very nice food. Seeing as we were only in for a drink we went around the front and walked into the bar. It is quite small with the bar counter straight ahead and seating available on the left. There is also a pool table here and this was being availed of. I waited at the bar to be served and had to wait a bit as there was nobody there for a while. When a lady appeared i ordered a glass of red wine and a 7up as i was driving. There is a television in the bar as well. There was a good few people eating hot food in the bar. The bar itself although comfortable isn’t a place that i would be rushing back to. It could certainly do with being modernised.

The gents toilets are out a door off the bar. They were very poorly lit when i went in and were not in the best of condition. The first part of the pub that we went into appeared to be a much nicer spot. I think it is a restaurant. I would go back and try out their cusine but woudn’t fancy heading into the bar again. It is a very convenient stop off if you are going to or coming from Kerry.

Toilet rating: 4/10
Overall rating: 6/10

Final Comment: As i said if i had been in the other section i am sure that i would have prefered that. Take a look for yourself.
