The Slate

Formerly Mollys and more recently bar rumba, The Slate is the pub that now sits on Tuckey street. We headed in recently to see what it is like. I made no secret of my dislike of bar rumba and its ignorant staff on this website. I have to say that i cannot say the same about The Slate bar. We encountered bouncers on the way and had no bother. The bar is now on the right hand side and not in the center of the pub. We went in to meet a group of people and they had a table. In fairness there was a very good crowd enjoying a night out here. I went to the bar and i ordered my pint of Murphys and the very enthusiastic girl behind the bar pulled the pint of stout in one go without even tilting the glass. As you can imagine i didn’t go to her for my next pint!

The toilets were ok when i used them. I had two more drinks in this bar and they were better quality to be fair. The Slate appears to be a lively spot to enjoy a drink.

Toilet rating: 7/10
Pint rating: 6/10
Overall rating: 6.5/10

Final comment: I had a good time at this pub. It isn’t all that different from a lot of pubs in the area.

Costigans

costigans bar Cork

We headed to Costigans on a Saturday night for a drink recently. Head down Washington Street towards UCC and you will find it. We were impressed with the place from the moment we walked in. It was busy but not packed and even though we didn’t manage to get a seat, we pirched ourselves at the bar quite comfortably. We were served immediately and with a smile from the bar staff. There was loads working so no hanging about! I felt that this pub has something that is missing in so many others. There are plenty of seats and standing room. There is an area at the front and other areas down the back, all with direct access to the bar. The pint of Murphy’s i had was fine. No complaints there.

I had to ask directions to find the toilet! They are upstairs and were a bit of a walk to get to. They were immaculate and were a good size overall. I couldn’t fault them to be honest. Apparently there is a heated smoking courtyard with a large screen tv although i did not see this for myself. I would recommend a visit to Costigans as it seems to be a very decent venue in the city.

Toilet rating: 8.5/10
Pint rating: 7/10
Overall rating: 8/10

Final comment: I could see myself heading back to Costigans. Pop in and see what you think of it.

Ryans

I was at a loose end for about 3 quarters of an hour in town and decided to head into Ryans bar on North Main street. There are not too many pubs that i would feel comfortable sitting on my own in Cork City but this is one of the few. This pub has been revamped and completely changed inside. I was here a few years back and it has changed quite a lot. There was a few people inside when i headed in. I took a seat down from the bar towards the toilets. The bar itself is long and narrow with white tiles on the ground. I ordered a pint of Murphy’s and tried to make chit chat to the bar man but he wasn’t interested. He was pleasant but appeared to be there just to serve the drinks and not interact. There was very relaxing music playing in the background. The tables and chairs across from me looked like two dining room sets! There is a smoking area available out a glass door. I relaxed into the comfortable leather seat and sipped at the very enjoyable pint. A plasma screen was showing greyhound racing.

The toilets were fine when i had a look at them but the gents is quite small. I even stayed for another pint which was just as enjoyable. Ryans is a pub you could pass a hundred times and not know that it is there. I would think that it has a very good local trade but i enjoyed the few drinks.

Toilet rating: 7/10
Pint rating: 7.5/10
Overall rating: 7/10

Final comment: I don’t think that you would head to this pub for a crazy night out but for one or two quiet drinks its fine.
