Finally found the time to catch up on some pub reviews last night. We headed to St Lukes and Henchys bar. This is a pub that i have heard a lot of people talking about and in general all of it was positive. It is situated on the corner of a very busy road. Parking is limited outside and there is no car park available. We went in at about 21:45 last night and we walked in the door on the left as you look at the pub. As we went inside some guy said ‘slainte’ to Jen and we walked past the bar and took a seat on the left. I was impressed with the interior and the character that this pub obviously has. I ordered a pint of Murphy’s and a glass of red wine at the bar and took in the new surroundings. I gave the girl behind the bar 10 euro and expected change. Instead she told me that i owed 30 cent more. I found this to be somewhat of a rip off to be brutally honest and should have questioned the pricing at the time. Normally a glass of wine would cost about 4 euro 50 and a pint anywhere up to 4 euro for stout. Thats only 8 euro 50. There was a good crowd in this part of the pub and for a Sunday night it was lively. The pint of Murphy’s was a nice pint and Jen said that the wine was enjoyable too. The red leather seats caught our eye!
I went and checked out the ‘lavatory’ in Henchys and it is small with two cubicles available and there was a smell even though the overall condition was fine. I didn’t get to check out the other part of the pub. I really enjoyed my trip here except for the fact of the overcharging in my opinion. I would say that it is very popular with local people in the area. For a pub thats full of charm and character then Henchys is a place to consider. It is a bit of a walk from the city center up a big hill but it is worth checking out.
Toilet rating: 7/10
Pint rating: 7.5/10
Overall rating: 7.5/10
Final comment: I don’t want to be too harsh on a very decent pub but does anyone else think this was expensive for these drinks or are these the prices that are now the norm.
was in the pub last week was a stew comp as a charity drive for an orphanage in canbodia the atmosphere was fab and i ordered as you but was surprised 2 years on that the prices are relatively unchanged!!! 60 cent of a difference!!! as we were leaving a 6 man band were setting up and i heard that there is music every thursday. and one sat a month!!! was so efficent and was packed solid!!! well impressed! my new local!
Notice your complaint about prices but henchys serve carafes of wine whice is a third of a bottle instaed of a quater of a bottle which is the norm allowing for that prices are average not a rip off
The stew Competition is on every year. It’s the closing of the Art Exhibition for the orphanage in Cambodia. The exhibition opens on thurs 14th October and closes with the stew comp on friday 29th oct. Two time polka (the 6 piece band) are playing. It’s a great 2 weeks and a great cause. I never miss it.
I back up the Carafe of wine v’s the glass issue as a reason for cost of round.
Henchys is my favourite pub in Cork – i am from Montenotte but live in Dublin and really look forward to heading down there on a friday night when i get home to Cork.
Everyone is really friendly and you will always know someone in the pub.
There are two sides to it, as you are standing outside looking at the pub – enter right into the “young” side – it has leather couches and TV’s for rugby matches.
Enter left – the older side of the pub – where the older locals drink without the interruption of music or sports on the tv..
All in all – a great Cork landmark pub – a great Munster pub and a great pint too…
First tripped over Henchys a few years ago when visiting cork with my wife and loads of her friends all Irish nurses working in England. We now have an annual trip to cork from the uk so my wife and her sisters can catch up and shop in the city! That leaves me and my two brother in laws at a loose end, a very sad state of affairs you will agree. Needless to say the only place for us is Henchys! It must be good the two Mikes both from county limerick are Guinness connoisseurs and they never seem to be disappointed and neither am I. As the token Brit it took a while to work out that the old wives tale that Murphys is better because it doesn’t give you a hangover was a little misleading (I wouldn’t usually say that but ther may be ladies reading this) Henchys is friendly atmospheric and real (no plastic paddy rubbish here). Roll on two weeks because I will be ther with the lads again. P.S. do I get a free pint now, best of luck to all.
six years on from this artical being written and i am delight to say that since it was written back in july 2006 there has been a price change, with the growing taxes on alcohol in every budget (except one)in the last 5 years the price is now €10.10 for a murphys and a wine… but if a smile or manners are shown by the customers who know maybe you might get a packet of tayto in the €10 deal
. great bar and have higher prices means that there is no need for a doorman thus makes the bar a more enjoyable place for the customers and no trouble..
