Sober Lane

The owner of this pub requested Munster Pubs to do a pub review. Ernest is the former manager of Cleavers bar on Liberty street. We went for dinner in town the other night and then decided to head to Sober Lane for a drink. It is situated where the Office Bar used to reside on Sullivans Quay. It wasn’t packed when we walked in but there was a crowd. I ordered the Murphy’s and a glass of white wine at the bar. I asked the bar man if he was Ernest and he said that he was. We had a chat and i told him that i was with Munster pubs. He was very pleasant and very kindly gave us the drinks on the house. I thought that this was a very nice gesture and thanked him. I had heard good reports about this pub before heading in. There were two musicians entertaining the crowd and they were very good. I had heard that this pub has a very impressive smoking area and Jen checked it out. She was very impressed and it was very busy inside. There is even a football table to keep people happy. It is not a huge bar but there is good amount of seating areas. The pint of Murphy’s was very enjoyable. I noticed a champagne lamp that is a great novelty.

I noticed a tv screen behind the bar which was turned off. I went and had a look at the toilets. One very good idea is a wall full of FHM bar room jokes! The gents toilets are small but were very well maintained. Ther is a communal long basin for washing your hands. Another clever idea is turing the tap on with your knee so not to contaminate your hands. Ernest appeared to have a very good rapport with his customers and it is obvious he is a peoples person. Overall Sober Lane is a very relaxed bar that is great for drinks in the city. I saw that they have a very reasonable pizza menu so pop in for a pint and a bite to eat. I will most certainly head back again as it is a cool new pub in Cork. Make sure to check it out.
