This pub is now gone.
I recently headed into The Thirsty Scholar on The Western Road. I had been in there a good few times when i was in first year in college but that was about 6 or 7 years ago. I have always associated it as being a student pub and i think most people are of this view. It was a Saturday night when i headed in and it was near closing time. The pub was emptying out at this stage but there was still a crowd inside. The girl at the bar was particularly friendly, maybe because her shift was nearing an end or maybe she was just a nice girl. We got a seat and i took in the surroundings. As far as i could remember not all that much has changed. It is quite a big pub that can get very busy.
The toilets were messy when i checked them on the night. We were only in the pub a short time as our lift arrived shortly after we went in but i have to say that i enjoyed re-visiting The Thirsty Scholar. I had some great nights in there in the past and the trip back brought back a lot of happy memories. I came across their website and its www.thethirsty.com. Check it out.

Final comment: The Thirsty Scholars location close to UCC certainly brings in a big student trade.
You gotta love the Scholar!
Not as good craic in recent times since a total change in staffing, but still pretty good. Pints are not good quality and to be honest they haven’t been in about two years. Any other drinks are grand though.
A live trad band used play every Monday night but they’ve broken up now, unfortunately! During the summer when the students are gone it’s pretty dead most of the time but there are still some good sessions when trad bands play which is usually on a weekly basis.
