Nancy Blakes

The first pub we headed to in Limerick City centre was Nancy Blakes. It’s on Denmark Street in the city. A few people recommended that i visit this pub. We walked in past the bouncers and into the beer garden area. It was packed with people and there was a great atmosphere. I got a pint of Guinness and a glass of Coors light. It was a battle to get to the bar in the small area inside. The bar staff were efficient and were working hard to serve everybody. Judging by the size of the crowd in this pub, it is one of Limerick City’s top night spots. There appeared to be people of all ages in this pub last weekend. We actually walked out of this pub through the beer garden entrance and went back in to the main pub. This part has a very traditional feel to it. It was very busy in this section as well. We managed just about to get standing room and i enjoyed another Guinness and Jen had another Coors Light. The pints that i had were very good to be honest.

The toilets were small and in need of attention. There may have been other toilets that i didn’t see but the ones i used were not in great condition. Overall it was an enjoyable trip into this pub and i can certainly recommend it. Check it out for yourself.

Toilet rating: 4/10
Pint rating: 7/10
Overall rating: 7/10

Final comment: Nancy Blakes is a pub that will suit many people. A taxi driver told me that it is very busy 7 nights a week.

  1. thanks for the review i am the owner of nancys and your coments are apreciated will keep a better eye on the toilets, next time your in give me a call

  2. I completely agree, Nancy’s is fantastic place!
was there in 2000 more or less and went there every day of the month i spent in Limerick. This june i went back to Limerick and the first place I went to was Nancy’s(I had such a good memory of it!)and it did not disapoint me, it was as good as i remember or better.
hope it stays so good for lots of time!

  3. Nancy Blakes is truly an amazing experience. Im here in Limerick for two more weeks on business and plan to go back several times. Nancy’s was a bit crowded, but I obviously attribute this to it being such a great pub. Everyone was having a blast! Well worth the crowd. Great music! Great atmosphere! Bar tenders are friendly and dont keep you waiting long. And, as the owner stated in an eariler post, the toilets were clean. CHEERS!

  4. Hi there my name is jack and i am from toronto canada. I visited nancy’s blakes in the summer of 2007 and i have to say it’s the best pub i have ever been in.

  5. Nancy Blakes is the most overated pub in Limerick! Its very poorly run especially by the owner who seems to care far more about money than customers. The toilets are very very dirty and the music is absolutely boring.Another major problem is the Security Staff who are very aggressive and think nothing except to threaten and abuse ordinary members of the public. If you want to get a more realistic review then you will take heed of what has been stated.I am not one for complaints but this place is also subject to a police investigation. Why d’ont you tell truth for once Donal! Disgraceful!

  6. I think it’s a great bar. The music is excellent. They obviously put thought and effort into it. The toilets are relatively clean most of the time if you ask me. The bouncers are by far the friendliest in town. I’ve met a couple of managers down there. They seem to run the place very well. But one thing how is Nancy Blakes allowed to get so overcrowded? It’s the only problem I have with the place. That is disgraceful! The amount of people they pack in there. Money and Greed. Shame.

  7. Nancy’s has been trading on it’s name for a long time now. I still go there quite regularly, but not so much out of choice, but more because of a lack of options if you want to smoke while you drink.

As a general rule the toilets are not great and are definitely not checked on an hourly basis. The biggest problem with Nancy’s is that they definitely let far too many people in. It’s an accident waiting to happen. The bouncers see this week in and week out. They however are only doing theur job. This is coming from the owner. It is going to take an accident to make a difference, but he obviously knows that legal system in Ireland is so crap that he would get away with it. We need more new bars like Flannerys to open up so that Nancy’s finally makes some changes for the better.

  8. nancys has fantastic staff the door men couldnt be more courtious it is busy in there ,like every other bar or club in town if people lerned how to handle them selfs drunk the toilets would be clean all the time the music is hopping especialy when the owners son does it great bar great service

  9. Had a very bad experience here. With a group of friends (mostly non drinkers like myself)from England/Wales who were visiting Limerick for my father’s funeral.Mid-afternoon on a saturday, having been served one drink,we were told we “had had enough”.The barman(blonde, ponytail)was extremely rude and seemed to take particular exeption to an uncle of mine who is in his mid 70′s and suffers from curvature of the spine.Maybe he didn’t fit the “cool profile”.Anyhow this very pleasant group will not be returning but I’m sure they will pass on the word about the least enjoyable part of their visit to Limerick.

  10. I spent four years in Limerick, I like Nancy’s but the one thing that irritates me the most is the queuing process – you can queue for ages and then a skinny blonde girl (in a belt!) will skip right past and flirt with one of the bouncers until she persuades him to let her and about 6 others in!
I worked as a bouncer in Limerick and I do appreciate the in and outs of the job but the way they act in this pub demeens the job.
It’s a tough job and someone’s gotta do it…but do it properly it’s no wonder people don’t take bouncers seriously!!!
    Sorry for the rant!!!

  11. Nancy`s security staff are a joke, the management must have the limerick mob on the door. locals only i was told there, know wonder limerick gets a bad name when you have to live there to get a pint, great city to go to , but nancy`s is not worth the hassle

  12. Nancys is the best pub in the country by a mile. Every member of staff – Donal , bar and door men are kind and courtious and always have a smile. Can’t understand previous negative comments

  13. Somebody people here seem to have vendettas more so than opinions. I live in Limerick and whilst Nancy’s would by my regular spot for a few I’ve never had a bad night there. OK, its always packed, you inevitably spill 1/4 of your drinks on the way through the crowd back to your group and the toilets aren’t exactly the Ritz but all these things only lend to the party atmosphere and laid back nature of the place. As for the comments about the doormen… I’ve never walked in without being greeted courteously or left without being told to have a good night. Its better than Smyths. Those bouncers are total pricks.
I’d definitely recommend it for a few drinks.

  14. as a very regular face in nancy’s i can honestly say it is by far the best pub in limerick, very friendly staff both on the door and behind the bar. your always gaurenteed a great night. would’nt change a thing it just adds to its charm!

  15. Nancy Blakes is the best pub ib Limerick and the staff are really well mannered. However as a vegetarian I would like to see more sandwiches other than egg salad as I have a food allergy. All the sandwiches are freshly made on brown or white bread and it is a lovely relaxing place to lunch. Suggestions could be cheese salad, pasta salad in rolls or plain cheese or tomato. Go easy on the cheese and the butter. Other than that Icant say enough good about the place.

  16. Mary you should explain your food allergy at the counter and they will help you as much as possible

  17. Ah yes Simon …..Another Comment

Maybe Simon should spend more time behind the bar in Nancys rather that writing fictitious reviews (3 so far).

Keep up the brown nosing – you’ll make manager!!

  18. maybe brian if you minded your own business you’d be better off!! and I’ve only 2 comments am sure there are more Simon’s that me in Ireland

  19. “Simon Says” yet again…C’mon lads “Simon” is either Donal or Keith (judging by his spelling). Comments like
“Every member of staff – Donal , bar and door men are kind and courtious and always have a smile”.
come from people with a vested interest. And I also noticed that you got quite irate with Brian (the second last poster) when he seemed to hit that particular nail on the head.

  20. Simon isn’t Donal or Keith or anyone working in Nancys or even looking to become manager! Simon is me who has been drinking in Nancys all my life and happened to post a comment that Mary should ask the bar staff at lunch hour about food that suits her food allergy condition

  21. Nancys is by far the best pub in limerick for a nite out…the atmosphere is just unreal.the door men are always friendly and the bar staff are at the top of their game.its the place to go for a nice drink with a group of friends..as for the previous comments regarding the toilets, are any public tiolets clean?get over it!

  22. these guys brian and barry mc seem to be right pains nancys is by far the best pub in limerick and the country

  23. Nancys is by a million miles the best pub in Limerick. It is potentially too packed on weekend nights – I believe that this may be testament to its popularity though. I don’t perceive the toilets to be particularly more or less nasty than many venues I’ve been to either in Limerick, Ireland or internationally. They’re normally a bit messy on a Saturday night when the pub is extraordinarily busy.

Good staff – good pints – good music – good beer garden – good atmosphere.

Bouncers can be a proper pain the arse betimes though….

  24. Craicing looking staff, especially one of the young ones; looks like a young Colin Farrell. I go back for a perv whenever I can…

  25. does anyone know anything about the lovely girl with white hair that serves in the outback she is just gorgeous

  26. I go to Nancys quite a bit and always have a great time while I’m there. I especially enjoy sunday evening when Gonzos Boogie Band put on a great show of soul and jazz, and I’ve enjoyed watching them for the last month of Sundays. But… just last night I was turned away because I was 21 and told it was over 23s. The bouncers werent arrogant about it, but said the OWNER insists upon it. Considering it was only 8 o clock, we hadnt been drinking, and the bar was half empty, my impressions of the place went right down the toilet for the time being. I wont say I know the laws governing bars in Ireland, but my impression was that 18 and over was the legal age of entry to all bars, I even appreciate 21 as an alternative because its borrowed from the US. 23 is just taking the piss. So Donal Mulcahy, not to sound impertenant, but how much more mature do you expect me to get between 21 and 23 years old, and with all due respect, whats the point in turning money away at the door. If anyone else has encountered this and feels any bit raw, maybe post a message here to back me up, because I know its not just me who feels this way.

  27. Nancys is probably the best pub in Limerick and has been for a long time…The regular bar staff are professional, friendly and courteuos…the music is great and the drink is generally top quality…A couple of areas could be improved however…The toilets are not always 100%, which is a big let down for such a high profile pub, especially when you think of the amount of tourists that go there, really need to sort that one out…It’s way to busy on Friday and Saturday nights, too many people being allowed in…Although it goes with being a popular pub, the queing system is a pain. Especially if you are already in there and have to leave for a short time. Trying to get back in without having to queue up again can be problematic. You practically have to give some of the security staff a photo of yourself so that they will remember that you were just in there…The majority of the security staff are extremely professional but again this is another area that could be improved. some of the door staff need to up their game with regard to politeness and professionalism…especially when clearing the pub at the end of the night and in dealing with patrons on the way in…but this is just a couple of individuals and 90% of the door staff are top class.

  28. Nancy’s is alright, nothing fantastic. Most people are full of s**t regarding staff. Everyone is alright but more is necessary to keep interest alive. there’ll always be business there, but never respect.

  29. May I say Nancy Blakes is an excelent Pub in Ireland. It caters for ages from 25 to 55,Whether you like a quite pint of goodness in the front bar from Aine/Sean/Seb etc or a cosy hot whiskey in the snug from the above or the outback for an erdinger, shot of jagger or just a regular pint from Cecil/Dom/Sinead/Ruth/Kate and many more.
music and atmosphere is spot on in all sections of the bar
i cannot find fault with any part of nancy blakes.
As for the comment there should be more pubs like flannerys,
Flannerys was built to copy Nancys Blakes. Poor imitation of the original. As for its being busy most bars would love to have the custom Nacys have @ the weekend.

  30. Great spot and I especially like it there midweek. Music can be iffy sometimes, depending on what member of staff is at it. As for the comment by Millerman above, you would have to question the validity of many of the reviews here when “reviewers” list off names of bar staff like above. See John Shine’s honest review with regards to staff comments. My Two Cents.

  31. This site is dodgy out! Anyone could be writing any of the above comments… Keith runs that bar. I don’t know him and I don’t want to. But you just have to watch the way he deals with the staff and the customers (good and Bad) I am welcomed by all the staff even though I don’t know any of them they just know my head from going in. Nancy Blakes is one great bar. Good on ye lads! My name is John Caroll.

  32. John, I don’t see how because we allow people to pass comment that it makes the site in any way ‘dodgy’.

  33. I was in Nancys last night, great night. One thing ruined it for me though & that was the bouncers walking around on their power trips. I was dancing like everyone else & this bouncer comes up to me & says “If you don’t stop, you’re out”! For what, dancing? We were having the craic and then we were warned again by two bouncers. Take a look at your CCTV and you’ll see we did nothing wrong. Great place but you have to tell your bouncer staff to get off their high-horses and show the paying customers a bit of respect!

  34. The most unfriendly place I’ve visited in LImerick city. The owners obviously have far too much money and don’t need to attract any new customers. On a recent trip to Limerick I was refused entry because I was too drunk. I’m not the world’s greatest drinker but having only consumed three pints of beer over the course of as many hours that evening I was anything but drunk.
My friend was already inside and had ordered drinks but the Mr. Security on the door had other opinions.
I have never been refused entry to a bar n my life and I have travelled all over the world and been in much more up- market places than this.
    Avoid avoid avoid

  35. Got to agree with the previous poster. Bar staff and security are arrogant and ignorant.Overrated bar full of its own importance. Avoid it and give your business to a bar where you’ll be appreciated.

  36. FIRST TIME I HAD A DRINK IN NANCYS WAS IN 1974 WHEN I WAS 20.I WAS IN THE THEN LOUNGE ON MY OWN LISTENNING TO TEN CC IM NOT IN LOVE.NANCY CAME OVER TO ME AND ASKED ME HOW OLD I WAS EVEN THOUGH I LIVED IN THE SAME STREET JUST A FEW DOORS DOWN FROM THE PUB.SHE DID NOT KNOW ME.WHEN SHE HEARD MY NAME SHE KNEW WHO I WAS.SHE QUIZZED ME ABOUT MY OCCOUPATION ETC ETC.FROM THEN ON I WAS A REGULAR IN THAT PUB FROM 1970 TO1980.I SPENT A LOT OF MONEY THERE. NOT A MICKEY MOUSE DRINKER AS DONAL WILL KNOW AND AINE AND DEIRDRE.I USED TO DRINK IN THE BAILEY AT THE TIME AND JOE MALONES WHICH WEE THE PLACES TO BE AT THE TIME.THE REASON I CHOOSE NANCYS WAS I GOT A JOB TEACHING MUSIC.I HAD TO CHANGE MY SOCIAL LIFE.I ENCOURAGED MY MUSIC FRIENDS TO DRINK IN NANCYS AND THEY ALL DID.NANCY HAD A POLICV AT THE TIME THAT WOMEN SHOULD ONLY BE SERVED HALF PINTS AND KISSING WAS TOTALLY OUT OF ORDER.SHE WAS TRYING TO COPY MA HOGANS PUB IN CATHERINE STREET WHICH HAD A STRICT REGIME UNLESS HER SON WAS SERVING.THE AGE GROUP FOR NANCYS AT THE TIME WOULD BE 30 UPWARDS.YOU CAN SEE HOW SURPRISED SHE WAS WHEN I CALLED IN FOR A DRINK.BUT MY COLLEAUGESBLENDED IN WITH EVERYBODY AND EVERY KNEW ONE ANOTHER AND BECAME GOOD FRIENDS.WE SAW NEW BIRTHS AND DEATHS/WE MOURNED THE PASSING OF A LOVED BARMAN NOEL PIPER WHO WAS MURDERED SAVIGALLY BEATEN TO DEATH ON HIS WAY HOME FROM WORK NOT AT NANCYS AT THE TIME BECAUSE HE LEFT.I HAVE FON MEMORIES OF NANCYS HUSBAND DAN WHO USED TO COME DOWN STAIRS HALF PISSED AND PLAY A CHEAP VIOLIN OUT OF TUNE/30 TO 40 PEOLE WOULD FILL THE BAR AT THAT TIME.ANOTHER MEMORY OF NANCY IS SHE ALLWAYS GAVE FLOWERS TO THE LOCAL CHURCH ONSUNDAY WITHOUT FAIL.I LIVE IN THE UK NOW NOT MY CHOICE BUT I WONDER WHAT DAN MULCAHY WOULD MAKE OF IT ALL .I DONT WANT TO THINK ABOUT IT.GOOD LOOK TO NANCYS NOW.GOD BE WITH THE OLD DAYS.

  37. Thanks for the memories Norman! You brought a tear to my eyes. Take care of yourself! Just happened to come upon the website this evening and enjoyed reading your post. Hi to Donal, and all the bar staff!

  38. Nancy’s is a good spot but like some of the above comment’s the only problem I would have is the bouncers on power trip’s! Remember these are paying customers & word spread’s.. albeit they are no where near as bad as Smyth’s bouncers who are proberbly the worst in Munster, Tony E & Matt & co are smashing people though & I suggest anyone who has a problem talk to them like I had to do one time a few years back, after Smyth’s you have this clown in Flannery’s he is early 20′s he has a nasty attitude problem. Simon Moynihan was the best bouncer I’ve seen in Limerick. Earnie Shaver’s who was the bouncer in my local Yatsees in Birkenhead was the best I’ve ever seen, never saw the man without a smile, he would bow & open the door for you on the way in…PS For those who don’t know who Earnie Shaver’s is? He put Mohammed Ali on his ass one time & is regarded by Mike Tyson Larry Holmes & George Foreman aswell as Ali as the hardest punching heavyweight of all time!!!! But di he datnd there acting all tough chewing bubblegum?? No because he did’nt have to the man had class.

  39. I plan to visit Limerick(I’m from the US) the last four days of August. I’d like to bring my fiddle. Are there any Irish trad sessions at Nancy’s where visitors may join in?

  40. we visited Nancys on the 12.8.2011, we enjoyed it very much , the Guinness was great , great music . we stayed for hours , next day we decided to go out late , we left hotel room at ten went straight to nancys by taxi . we got out of taxi went to door and bouncer said you have enough tonight , he wouldnt listen i tried to explain we just left our hotel room no drink in us but he just brushed us aside to let girls in wearing mini skirts and they were faling around the place . my wife and friends were offended , we were never refused anywhere in our life . we travelled from kildare

  41. Hi Donal,
Some pretty impressive comments on your Post’s well done in this climate and all,
I wonder if you can help me, on the 23 Dec 2013 at approx. 02.30 hrs outside The Icon on Denmark street my son was involved in a hit & run resulting in him having a broken ankle and a bruised hand, the driver failed to stop it was a dark VW Passat, would your cctv show anything, I’d appreicate a call or reply to email
