I have been in this pub quite a few times but haven’t had an alcoholic drink. The Cotton Ball is a pub on the Old Youghal Road in Mayfield, Cork. I have only been in the lounge area and that is quite impressive. It is very spacious with plenty of seating all around. It is an especially good pub to watch a match in, which i have done a couple of times. The bar staff are efficient and i have been there when it has been quite busy and you are never waiting too long to get served. I cannot comment on the bar area as i have not been in there.
The toilets off the lounge area have been ok when i’ve seen them and the gents is small. The Cotton Ball is a pub that i have enjoyed visiting and i have no doubt i will be back there again. It is most certainly worth a look.
Toilet rating: 6.5/10
Overall rating: 7/10
Final comment: The main competition for this pub is O’ Mahony’s which is just a short distance away.
Hi, ive been to the cotton ball a few times. The pint was good but a small red haired inexperienced barman was pulling very bad pints and his attitude was terrible. e kept watching the rugby match and eating crisps while serving pints. He is clearly not a barman and not good with people.
I’ve been to this bar a few times frequenting the bar area, watching t.v. & the pool table is a constant distraction.
the balls get stuck & the engineers (barstaff) have a great solution, push, shove & bounce it until something happens.
I think there is an outbreak of Tourettes in the bar too, all I could hear was “Scone”, “Squid” & a barman who I think owns the place saying “Now” all the time.
There is a great bunch of barstaff working in the Cotton Ball with an exception of 1 or 2 jumped up crawlers.
They have started serving food recently & it is of high standard & very tasty.
One drawback is the location of the smoking room. It’s just too close to the bar area & the smokey smell wafts in to the bar regularly.
There is a “unisex” toilet next to the smoking but a lady would have to be desperate to chance it, the frosted glass on the door wasn’t a good idea.
All in all a good craic & great pint.
I go to the Cotton Ball a lot as I have a stomach problem which causes eruptions of gas at all the wrong times.
The lads don’t seem to notice anymore as I’ve moved into the lounge rather than stay in the bar.
I ask the chef to burn the food a bit as the smell disguises my aromas.
I am a regular in the cotton ball and i think its a fantastic place to have a drink, ehhh Heineken there. With patient, attentitive bar staff, this well managed establishment has recently started serving food, which is of a very high standard. I have been know to wear strange colourful shirts, yet the bar staff have no problem serving me,something which might not be accepted in other pubs.
5 stars
A lovely pub where you can go to have a laugh with some characters.great food, great atmosphere and most of all, great drink. As i am a midget,i have certain requirements in the bar,and the staff and customers are only too happy to help, like a stool to help me play pool,or a boost to my bar seat.it is also child friendly, with facilities to keep them entertained while the parents drink all day. With free internet,i dont have to worry about my son at any stage of the day
I’ve been to the Cotton Ball a long time now.
The barstaff have declined in recent years due to lack of competant management, I think they gave up when the owner stepped back a bit.
You can have very long waits for drinks as the barstaff all disappear from the bar to have a cuddle around the back of the bar.
It was never like this before & I think they should keep this sort of thing behind closed doors, although I heard that 2 of the barmen are getting married in Lanzarote soon so they might take on some new staff then.
The food is advertised but rarely there so I can’t comment.
Its a safe pub too…To Highlight that there is sign behind the counter says “Number of Days since last Anal Rape:- 126″
The Fob & Gill down the road is my favourite now, plenty of friendly old men and they give great head on their pints.
I think that the cotton ball is a fantastic pub I dont think people realise how generous and unusual it is to find free internet in a pub. Of all the pubs in mayfield it is by far and away the cleanest and most modern yet keeps an air of old world charm there is never any trouble unlike some of the other pubs in the locality.
I couldn’t agree more with you Tim. The toilets in particualr have that old world smell about them, especially early on a Sunday afternoon when all the mature gents arrive in for their Beamish after mass.
Tim I wouldn’t mind having a pint with you some time….gimme a holler ahhhhhhhhh ahhhhhhhhh
Hi – very great website you have made. I enjoyed reading this posting. I did want to issue a comment to tell you that the design of this site is very aesthetically pleasing. I used to be a graphic designer, now I am a copy editor in chief for a marketing firm. I have always enjoyed functioning with computing machines and am attempting to learn computer code in my free time (which there is never enough of lol).
