Chaplins

S4200086

Munster pubs travelled north to Dublin for a few days to see how Leinster pubs compare! I spent two nights up visiting Alan, a friend of mine. We were out at the international music festival in Dun Laoighaire on Saturday afternoon and there was a great buzz about the place with plenty of street entertainment. We headed out at about half nine and the first pub we entered was Chaplins bar located in Dublin 2. There was a good crowd of dejected Dublin football fans inside drowning their sorrows! We ordered two pints of Guinness and they were 3 euro 85 a pint which in terms of Dublin city prices isn’t too bad. It’s quite a small pub and even though it was busy we managed to get a seat. I have to say that the pint was of good quality and i enjoyed it as did my fellow reviewer. There is nothing very different about this pub but it is a nice pub for a pint.

The toilets were a bit messy when i checked them out but certainly not the worst i have seen. We stayed for the one and then headed on our way. As i said Chaplins is small but it is a place that i would more than likely head into again.

Toilet rating: 5.5/10
Pint rating: 8/10
Overall rating: 7.5/10

Final comment: Chaplins pub is a grand pub. Have a look for yourself.

The Lansdowne Bar

Heuston Station

Heuston station is the main railway station situated in Dublin 8. We were coming from an international rugby match at Lansdowne road in the past and as we had a bit of time to spare we popped into the bar at the railway station. Slightly apprehensive i followed Fos in and we got seats across from the bar. Being from Cork and used to the facilities in Kent station i was pleasantly surprised at the set this pub had. It was spacious and although busy still had quite a few free seats. I think i decided not to have a pint of stout so i got a pint of beer instead which is very unusual. There was a guy on guitar playing and singing and i thought he was quite good but was receiving no appreciation for his effort from uninterested commuters. The pint was ok but didn’t get a chance to finish as our train was ready to go so we went for it.

The toilets are up to the usual standards of railway stations which isn’t great. The ones i have used are in poor condition plus you have to pay to use them. It is not going towards their upkeep it seems. I only paid a flying visit to this bar and if i was very early for a train i may head back there again.

Toilet rating: 3/10
Pint rating: 5/10
Overall rating: 5/10

Final comment: You can’t expect a great lot from a bar such as this. In fairness it is quite a nice place. If your in Heuston station you can take a peek.

The Dubliner

The Dubliner is the pub of the famous Jurys Ballsbridge hotel. This is first review of a Dublin pub. This is one of Dublin’s top hotels and we stayed there for the visit of Paul Mc Cartney to Ireland. Its very much a business persons hotel. The Dubliner has been voted hotel pub of the year twice before and we found it to be a very decent pub. The description of the pub depends on what entrance you walk in. If you go in from the hotel reception there are seats ahead and the bar is off to the left. The bar itself is long. The staff were very professional and of course they had a great selection of drinks. If you keep walking down there are more seats straight ahead and on the right. It is a comfortable and spacious pub and nice for a chat and a few drinks. I was drinking Guinness and it was quite good. It was busy as its very close to the RDS where the concert took place.

The toilets were grand. They were clean and well attended to. It is a very popular Dublin pub and it seemed to be doing very well on my visit. I have to mention their ‘Coffee Dock’. It is a bistro thats open 23 hours of the day. I’ve never seen anything like it in a hotel before. We were having our meal at 2:30am! It was delicious and reasonable too. I have only had the one visit but it was very enjoyable. I would recommend you stay here if going to concert in the area. Its expensive but its very convenient and the service you get is second to none.

Toilet rating: 8/10
Pint rating: 8/10

Final comment: The Dubliner is convenient if your staying at the hotel. It great for a few good quality pints.
