The Dry Dock Bar

dooleys 2

We were down in Waterford for the night last night and we stayed at Dooleys hotel in the city center. I decided to take the opportunity to review a few pubs while there. We got a very good deal on the hotel and were delighted with the room and the hotel in general. There is car parking available across the road by the bus station. It costs 5.50 for 24 hours. The Dry dock bar is the main bar in the hotel and is a very trendy hotel bar. It is a good size and is split into two areas. There is the main bar and The Paddy Kirwan room just off the main bar. We sat in this room and there is plenty of horse racing memorabilia to grab your attention. The seats in this area are very comfortable. We ordered bar food from the a la carte menu and it was delicious and very good value. Jen had a glass of red wine and i had a mineral. I didn’t have a pint in the bar. The whole bar was full of people eating food which indicates that it is very popular for food. There is live Irish music on a Wednesday night during the summer season. There is live music every Friday and Saturday night.

The toilets are situated outside of the bar in the main lobby of the hotel. They are big toilets and in immaculate condition. This is a great bar and a great hotel. I can highly recommend Dooleys if you are thinking of staying in Waterford city. It has a lot of old world charm combined with modern day facilities. I would certainly stay here again. Final comment: The Dry Dock Bar is a nice hotel bar with plenty of atmosphere.

The Sweep

Located on the Waterford side of Kilmeaden town, approx 15 mins outside the city is The Sweep. I’ve often passed it on the way to Waterford with a huge amount of people sitting outside sipping on pints and eating their lunch. Granted of course you’d prefer a nice sunny day to do that. On my last trip to Waterford I called in for lunch on the way home, possibly because sitting in the God awful traffic jams in Kilmeaden (caused by the building of footpaths!?!) made me hungry.

It’s a nice sized pub with one main room that looked more like a restaurant than a bar and one or two small rooms off it to the rear. The area that the bar covers seems too small to accomodate lots of thirsty souls but I haven’t been in there at night so can’t form a true impression of the place.

It’s a nice place to have lunch and they seem to have a good selection available to suit most tastes. After all, it’s impossible to please all the people all the time. You’ll know you’ve passed this pub during the summer months, it’ll be the one with masses of people sitting outside it looking happy and refreshed as you whizz by.

Meladon Bar – Dungarvan Park Hotel

During my first chance to stay at the impressive Dungarvan Park Hotel on the outskirts of the town in Co. Waterford, I managed to sample both food and drink in the Meladon Bar, the imbibing emporium of the aforementioned hotel. Their bar food/evening meal selection catered for all tastes, thankfully it wasn’t just a whole load of the same type of food cooked differently and called by different names. I had quite a filling dinner followed by a couple of fine pints of stout served by the helpful, friendly and courteous bar staff. The appearance of the bar is pretty much the same all over as what is pictured above.

As hotel bars go, I’ve found that this is a fairly run of the mill example. When I visited during the week the place was virtually deserted, apart from a few people attending gatherings at the hotel.

On a return visit for lunch, the bar was quite obviously more lively than I had experienced previously. It is noteworthy however that during the depths of the lunchtime rush, the staff still managed to remain as courteous and friendly as ever. Our meals were served quickly and, as before, were quite tasty.

If I ever find myself in Dungarvan overnight again, I’ll be only too happy to give both the hotel and the bar my custom.
